Bangkok, December 3, 2024 – Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), was honored to speak on the topic "The Collaboration for a Sustainable Future" at the Sustainability Forum 2025: Synergizing for Driving Business, organized by Bangkok Biz. The event, held on December 3-4, 2024, at Paragon Hall, 5th Floor, Siam Paragon, focused on the theme of fostering partnerships to achieve sustainability.
In his address, Suphachai emphasized the importance of collaboration in building a sustainable future, outlining strategies to achieve Net Zero emissions and foster an inclusive economy that leaves no one behind. Key executives from CP Group, including Dr. Theerapol Thanomsakyut, Chief Sustainability and Strategy Officer; Thiti Luchintanont, Chief Executive Officer of the Animal Feed Ingredients Business Group; Somjetna Pasakanon, Director of Corporate Sustainability Development; and Chomkit Sirikool, Senior Executive Vice President for Government Affairs and Sustainability, attended the session.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Bangkok Biz has organized this forum, bringing together organizational leaders, experts, and thinkers from various sectors to share insights and approaches to achieving sustainability. Other notable participants included Pichai Chunhavajira, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, who delivered the keynote speech, "Financial Policies for a Sustainable Economy". Representatives from leading organizations such as the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), Port Authority of Thailand, Bank of Thailand (BOT), Government Savings Bank, PTT, Thai Oil, and private sector leaders like Grab Thailand, WHA Corporation, and the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) also joined the forum to exchange ideas and initiatives for driving a sustainable future.
Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), shared his insights on Thailand’s sustainability landscape, emphasizing the nation’s remarkable achievement of being ranked No. 1 in sustainability in ASEAN for seven consecutive years. However, he noted that significant challenges remain to be addressed.
On a global scale, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is progressing at only 17% completion, with many dimensions still unfulfilled. This has prompted the United Nations to call for accelerated action under the theme “Forward Faster.” Suphachai outlined five key focus areas:
- Gender Equality: Building a society where everyone—regardless of gender, including men, women, and LGBTQ+ groups—enjoys equal opportunities.
- Decarbonization: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero.
- Inclusive Economy: Ensuring equitable distribution of opportunities across all sectors.
- Access to Clean Water: Providing sustainable access to clean water to support livelihoods.
- Investment in Future Technologies: Advancing innovations such as clean energy, carbon capture technologies, and hydrogen energy.
Suphachai emphasized that “Net Zero is not merely an ambition; it is a shared mission that requires action from all sectors.” He also highlighted the critical need to mobilize over $5 trillion in global investments to support the achievement of the SDGs.
Suphachai Chearavanont introduced the 3D Model Framework, a strategic approach to shaping a sustainable future, comprising three core components:
1. Digitalization
The rapid growth of the digital economy is driving global transformation but brings significant energy challenges, especially the need for clean energy. Data centers, which require vast amounts of energy, are at the forefront of this transition. Thailand has emerged as a key destination for data center investments, following Singapore's constraints on land and clean energy. Over the past 12 months, Thailand has attracted $10 billion in investments at a 1:1 growth rate.
Suphachai also highlighted the essential role of nuclear energy as a future clean energy source, raising a critical question: “Are we ready to embrace nuclear energy, not as a tool for war, but as a cornerstone of a sustainable future?”
2. Deglobalization
Global supply chains are undergoing significant shifts, driven by the China +1 strategy, which seeks to reduce dependency on China. This trend positions Thailand as a focal point for investors across industries such as consumer goods, food security, and electronics. Suphachai emphasized that this strategy creates opportunities for Thailand to enhance its economic competitiveness and secure long-term stability.
3. Decarbonization
Reducing carbon emissions is one of humanity’s greatest challenges to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Suphachai warned of dire consequences if global temperatures rise by 3°C, including a 60-meter increase in sea levels that could leave 1.7 billion people facing starvation.
CP Group has set an ambitious goal to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050. Despite facing challenges, such as exceeding carbon emission targets by 0.5 million tons in 2024, the Group is actively implementing key initiatives to drive progress toward this objective.
Key Initiatives:
- Afforestation Projects: CP Group is investing in large-scale tree planting programs to absorb carbon dioxide and enhance biodiversity.
- Clean Energy Integration in Data Centers: Recognizing the substantial energy consumption of data centers, the Group is testing and integrating clean energy solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.
Interim Targets:
In addition to the 2050 goal, CP Group aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions by 2030 through:
- Promotion of Renewable Energy: Increasing the use of renewable energy sources across operations.
- Enhancing Energy Efficiency: Implementing measures to improve energy efficiency in all business units.
- Community-Involved Afforestation: Engaging both organizational entities and local communities in tree planting initiatives to foster collective environmental stewardship.
Suphachai Chearavanont, CEO of Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), underscored the importance of collective responsibility at both societal and global levels, calling for collaboration across all sectors. He stated, "We need to think and act beyond the scale of our organizations, envisioning the society and planet we will pass on to future generations."
Suphachai emphasized the vital role of employees in driving sustainability, highlighting that change begins with small, everyday actions that can ripple outward to create a broader societal impact. He remarked, "Sustainability starts from the small things we do in our daily lives, which then influence society on a larger scale. Everyone at CP Group is a crucial part of this journey."
In conclusion, Suphachai stressed that the transition to a digital economy will significantly increase energy demands, making the pursuit of Net Zero emissions a shared mission rather than the responsibility of any single organization. He reaffirmed, "Net Zero is not just a goal; it is a shared responsibility for the entire world."
Deputy Prime Minister Pichai Chunhavajira Visits Charoen Pokphand Group's Exhibition Booth
At the event, the Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) also showcased the exhibition titled "Sustainable Innovation: Traceability for a Better Tomorrow", reflecting the Group's commitment to elevating the standards of the animal feed corn industry through cutting-edge technology.
The centerpiece of the exhibition was the Traceability System, developed by Charoen Pokphand Produce Co., Ltd. (CPP) and Bangkok Produce Merchandising Public Company Limited (BKP). This system integrates Blockchain technology and satellite imagery into the production process to ensure transparency at every stage, enhancing the supply chain in alignment with sustainable development practices.
The initiative underscores CP Group’s vision of leveraging technology and innovation to provide "food for the body, food for the mind, and opportunities for accessing value to ensure health and well-being for all."
Additionally, the Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) emphasized its environmental responsibility through a clear policy stating that the Group will "neither purchase nor import animal feed corn produced from forest encroachment areas or areas affected by burning." This ensures that the Group's products have no negative impact on the environment while actively supporting sustainable ecosystem conservation in all dimensions.
This exhibition marks another significant step in reaffirming CP Group's commitment to building a better and more sustainable future for all. It also underscores the Group's role as a global leader in sustainability, dedicated to fostering a stable society and environment for both present and future generations.
